The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has said that misconduct and impunity among officers of the Nigeria Police Force have dropped significantly since he took office, adding that public complaints against personnel have fallen noticeably under his leadership.

Speaking during a public engagement, the IGP noted that the volume of complaints received against police officers has reduced compared to when he assumed office earlier in the year.

He maintained that a sincere assessment of the force’s conduct would show a clear improvement in professionalism and accountability among the rank and file.

Since becoming Nigeria’s 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, Disu has repeatedly stressed a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, abuse of power and human rights violations, insisting that officers found culpable of misconduct would face disciplinary action rather than being merely transferred or redeployed.

He has used several official visits to state commands to engage directly with rank-and-file officers, describing such interactions as key to identifying welfare issues and operational gaps within the force.

The IGP’s latest comments come amid continued public complaints in parts of the country over unlawful arrests, prolonged detention without trial, and extortion at checkpoints, issues he has acknowledged and pledged to confront through stricter enforcement and closer supervision of command structures.

Disu has maintained that rebuilding public trust in the police will require sustained discipline at every level of the force, alongside cooperation from members of the public in reporting infractions.
