Nigeria’s daily Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) imports surged by 207 percent in June 2026, reaching 18.1 million litres per day compared to 5.9 million litres per day recorded in May. Data released in the latest monthly factsheet by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reveals a sharp shift in nationwide fuel supply dynamics.

The increase in import volumes coincided with a 21.7 percent decline in domestic refinery receipts, which fell from 41.5 million litres per day in May to 32.5 million litres per day in June. Despite the drop in local output, total daily PMS receipts available to the market rose by 6.8 percent, moving from 47.4 million litres in May to 50.6 million litres in June, as higher import volumes bridged the domestic shortfall.

Imported fuel accounted for 35.8 percent of Nigeria’s total daily petrol supply in June, up from 12.4 percent in May. Average daily petrol consumption also experienced a slight uptick, rising by 2.4 percent to 47.4 million litres per day. The increased import volume boosted the country’s national stock sufficiency from 16.2 days in May to 19.7 days in June.

The NMDPRA factsheet also provided details across other petroleum sub-sectors:

* Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): Total daily LPG supply climbed 24 percent to 5.1 kilotonnes per day in June, driven by a 1,400 percent surge in imports (rising from 0.1 KT/d to 1.5 KT/d) to cover a 10 percent drop in domestic gas receipts.
* Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) & Aviation Fuel: Diesel receipts dropped 14 percent to 16.2 million litres per day, sourced entirely from local refineries without imports. Aviation fuel receipts declined by 31 percent to 2.5 million litres per day.
* Gas Infrastructure: Total domestic gas supply grew by 3 percent to 5.116 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bscf/d). Key national gas infrastructure projects recorded progress, with the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline reaching 94.3 percent completion and the OB3 gas pipeline attaining 96 percent completion.
