Congolese Cruiserweight Boxer, Romeo Bololo Katompa, Burned Alive in Johannesburg Xenophobic Assault

A rising Congolese professional boxer, Romeo Bololo Katompa, has been brutally murdered after being burned alive during a horrific xenophobic attack in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The tragic incident occurred in the volatile neighborhood of Hillbrow, a central Johannesburg area notorious for high crime rates and historical anti-foreigner tensions.

Witnesses reported that a heavily armed mob targeted Katompa in a premeditated assault. The attackers beat the cruiserweight fighter severely before dousing him with petrol and setting him ablaze. Emergency medical responders rushed to the scene following distress calls, but the young athlete succumbed to his catastrophic burn injuries before reaching the hospital.

The brutal murder of Katompa, a promising talent in the African boxing circuit who migrated to South Africa to advance his professional career, has sent shockwaves through the expatriate community and international sports federations.

The Congolese diaspora in South Africa has strongly condemned the killing, characterizing it as a targeted, hate-fueled act of xenophobia. They have lambasted local law enforcement for failing to protect foreign nationals and dynamic migrant communities under constant threat from local vigilante groups.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng province confirmed they have launched a full-scale homicide investigation into the attack. While no arrests have been made, detectives are scanning available surveillance footage and interviewing neighborhood witnesses to identify the perpetrators.

The incident has significantly heightened diplomatic and social tensions, drawing renewed global scrutiny to South Africa’s ongoing struggles with xenophobic violence and systemic security failures in its major metropolitan hubs.
