Bellingham Strikes Twice as England Edge Norway to Reach World Cup Semis
Jude Bellingham produced another moment of magic to fire England into the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, netting twice as Thomas Tuchel’s side edged out a determined Norway 2-1 after extra time in a gruelling quarter-final clash in Miami.
The Real Madrid star, already in red-hot form heading into the contest, was made to work for the win after Norway shocked the Three Lions with an early opener. Andreas Schjelderup, handed a rare start in place of Antonio Nusa, cut in from the left flank and curled a stunning effort over Jordan Pickford and in off the post in the 36th minute, sending the Norwegian bench into wild celebration and stunning an England side that had dominated possession for long stretches.
England, who had controlled the tempo of the game through Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Elliot Anderson down the left channel, responded just before the break. Gordon slipped a low ball into the box, and Bellingham took it in his stride, danced past Torbjørn Heggem, and drilled a low finish into the far corner to level matters at 1-1 in first-half stoppage time.
The second half turned into an arm-wrestle in the Florida heat, with both sides toiling as fatigue set in. Norway had the better of the chances after the restart, with Kristoffer Ajer rattling the crossbar from a corner and Erling Haaland unable to force home the rebound.
Nusa, introduced alongside Oscar Bobb, also tested Pickford late on, but the England goalkeeper stood firm to force the tie into extra time.
It was Bellingham, once again, who had the final word. Morgan Rogers’ driven effort from range was only parried by Ørjan Nyland, and the Dortmund product turned Real Madrid star reacted quickest, slamming the loose ball home in the 93rd minute to hand England a lead they would not relinquish. The result took Bellingham’s tally for the tournament to six goals, matching the record for the most goals scored by an Englishman in a single World Cup edition.
England, captained by Harry Kane, now await the winner of the other quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland, with the semi-final clash set for July 15.
Norway, appearing in their first-ever World Cup quarter-final, will exit the tournament with plenty of credit, having pushed the Three Lions all the way before bowing out.
For Tuchel, the win represents just the fourth time in England’s history and the first since 2018 that the nation has reached the World Cup semi-finals, a landmark that will fuel growing belief that this could finally be the year the Three Lions end their long wait for global glory.
