Kaduna’s Road Project at ABU Exceeds Expectations, Says Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has described the ongoing reconstruction of internal roads by the Kaduna State Government as the institution’s most significant infrastructure intervention in more than 40 years.

Ahmed made the remarks on Saturday during an inspection of the project, where he praised Uba Sani for extending the road rehabilitation to the federal university without a formal request from the institution.

According to the vice-chancellor, the quality of the project has surpassed the university’s expectations, adding that it represents the first major intervention of its kind on the campus in over four decades.

He said the university’s engineers have been actively involved in supervising the construction to ensure compliance with professional engineering standards, expressing confidence that the roads would serve the institution for many years.

Ahmed also described the intervention as a demonstration of the governor’s commitment to education and good governance, while urging other governors in Northern Nigeria to support ABU, which he said remains a regional asset.

Earlier, the Managing Director of the Kaduna State Roads Agency, Dr. Abdullahi Baba Ahmed, said the inspection formed part of the agency’s assessment of ongoing road projects across the state.

He disclosed that the Kaduna State Government is executing about 150 road projects covering approximately 1,345 kilometres across the state’s 23 local government areas.

Baba Ahmed described the reconstruction of ABU’s internal roads as a landmark intervention in a federal university, noting that engineering assessments, including coring, in-situ density and California Bearing Ratio tests, had confirmed the quality of the work.

He added that the university’s Faculty of Engineering participated in the laboratory tests and expressed optimism that the project would be completed before the end of August or early September despite the rainy season.

The President of the Students’ Union Government, Abdulrahman Aliyu, described the reconstruction as one of the most significant infrastructure projects recently undertaken on the campus.

Some members of the university community also welcomed the development.

A staff member, Deborah Danjuma, said the project had improved accessibility and enhanced the university’s image, while Civil Engineering student Yusuf Bala noted that it addressed a long-standing challenge despite road maintenance being the responsibility of the Federal Government.

Another student, Chidima Sunday, said poor road conditions and flooding had previously hindered movement during the rainy season, while Faith Idowu called for improved transportation services after the project is completed.
