Nollywood Mourns Yoruba Veteran Actor, Taiwo ‘Elegbeje Ado’ Adeshina

The Yoruba film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, Taiwo Adeshina, popularly known as Elegbeje Ado.

The actor’s passing was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor, Kunle Afod in a post shared on Instagram. Although Afod did not disclose the cause of death, Seun Oloketuyi later confirmed that the actor died on Monday after a brief illness.

In his tribute, Afod described the late actor as one of the legends of the Yoruba movie industry, praising his immense contributions to the growth of indigenous cinema and the lasting impact he made through his performances.

He also extended condolences to the actor’s family, friends, colleagues and fans, noting that the memories and legacy he left behind would continue to inspire generations.

Elegbeje Ado’s death adds to the growing list of notable losses recorded by the Yoruba movie industry in recent times, including veterans Kola Oyewole, Fesogboye Oyewole and Adeshina Oshin.

Before his death, the veteran actor had transitioned from secular filmmaking to Christian ministry after becoming a pastor.

In an interview with Kunle Afod in April 2024, he explained that he believed God had called him to step away from mainstream acting and dedicate his life to Christian service.

He disclosed that he stopped appearing in secular productions and thereafter focused exclusively on gospel-themed films. He also spoke about experiencing prophetic visions, which he said marked the beginning of his new spiritual journey.

Over a career spanning more than two decades, Elegbeje Ado established himself as one of the respected figures in Yoruba cinema. He became widely recognised for portraying kings, chiefs, elders and other culturally significant characters that resonated with audiences.

He later ventured into Christian filmmaking, producing his first gospel movie, Egberun Odun (One Thousand Years), as part of his new mission in ministry.

The nickname “Elegbeje Ado,” by which he became popularly known, originated from one of his memorable screen roles. Throughout his career, he featured in several acclaimed Yoruba films, including Ageku Abela, Oko Abiku and Kadara Mi, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the Yoruba film industry.
