As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has issued a stern warning to political actors.

The commission declared that anyone found tampering with the personal data of Nigerian citizens will face prosecution. This strong statement, delivered by National Commissioner Vincent Olatunji, comes amid growing concerns over data privacy and voter information. With the electoral commission holding details of over 94 million registered voters, protecting this information has become a critical national security issue.

The NDPC’s warning targets the growing collection of personal data by political parties. Olatunji expressed deep concern about how these organisations manage sensitive information gathered from members and supporters.

He noted that many political parties lack a proper understanding of their data privacy obligations. The commission has been working closely with parties to ensure they implement necessary privacy safeguards required by law.

A key part of the NDPC’s strategy involves extensive training and awareness campaigns. The commission is conducting weekly training sessions for political parties on responsible data handling and compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act. These sessions are designed to reach grassroots structures where voter mobilisation largely takes place. The goal is to build a culture of data privacy that permeates the entire electoral process.

Recognising the influence of traditional institutions, the NDPC has also expanded its collaboration with traditional rulers. The commission has appointed a Royal Ambassador from the Southwest Council of Traditional Rulers to help raise awareness in rural communities. Olatunji emphasised that traditional rulers are among the most trusted channels for communication. He pointed out that these rulers can reach artisans, market women, transport workers, and others who play a major role in shaping political conversations.

Ultimately, the NDPC’s mission is to ensure the 2027 elections are free from data abuse and exploitation. The commission is building a framework to protect citizens, including a partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Political actors are now on notice that tampering with Nigerians’ personal data will not be tolerated. As the nation prepares for what is expected to be a highly contested election, the protection of voter data remains a top priority.
