Kaduna Govt Confirms Over ₦1bn Spent on Scholarships, Student Loans in 3 Years
The Kaduna State Government has invested more than ₦1 billion in scholarships, student loans and educational support programmes over the last three years, according to an announcement made on June 4, 2026.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this during a press briefing in Kaduna, stating that the investment is a key part of Governor Uba Sani’s human capital development agenda.
A major intervention cited by the Commissioner was the signing of an Executive Order that reduced tuition fees by 50 per cent across all state-owned tertiary institutions, aimed at making higher education more accessible. Commissioner Maiyaki detailed the financial commitments, revealing that ₦493.27 million was spent on overseas scholarships for 42 students pursuing critical fields like medicine and engineering, and ₦425.52 million was disbursed for local scholarships. The administration also committed ₦105 million to a student loan scheme and released ₦27.25 million to support law graduates with Nigerian Law School registration fees.
Providing further details, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board, Prof. Yahaya Saleh Ibrahim, noted that over 21,106 students in more than 40 higher institutions have benefited from the programmes. He stated that the flexible repayment structure of the loan scheme allows beneficiaries to repay based on their financial circumstances after graduation. “Kaduna became the first state in Nigeria to provide not only scholarships but also student loans, expanding access to higher education for thousands of young people,” Prof. Ibrahim said.
A beneficiary, Al’Ameen Waheed, a Geography student at Kaduna State University (KASU), expressed gratitude to the state government, describing the scheme as a lifeline that has lifted a huge burden from his family.
