Defence HQ Moves to Rescue Kidnapped Retired Major General Abubakar
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed that efforts are underway to rescue retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife following their abduction by suspected bandits in Katsina State.
The former military spokesperson and his spouse were reportedly kidnapped along a highway in Matazu Local Government Area over the weekend. The attackers were said to have intercepted their vehicle and taken them to an undisclosed location.
Sources indicated that the couple’s driver survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot injuries and has since been receiving medical attention. Security operatives also recovered the victims’ vehicle at the scene.
Reacting to the incident, the Defence Headquarters said troops and intelligence units have been mobilised to secure the safe release of the retired general and his wife.
A senior military official disclosed that the operation is ongoing and being handled with urgency. “We are working round the clock to rescue him,” the official said, reaffirming the military’s commitment to ensuring the victims return safely.
Security has reportedly been reinforced in the area, with police authorities and other agencies intensifying search-and-rescue efforts.
The abduction has again drawn attention to the persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region, particularly in Katsina State, where incidents of banditry and kidnappings along major routes remain a major concern.
Stakeholders have condemned the attack, describing it as alarming given the victim’s status as a retired senior officer who served the nation for decades.
