FG Approves Massive Infrastructure Overhaul, Stadium Upgrades Nationwide
The Federal Government has approved an extensive package of sports infrastructure projects across the country aimed at transforming Nigeria’s sporting landscape and restoring key facilities to international standards.
The approvals were granted through the National Sports Commission (NSC) during its Tenders Board meeting. The ratified contracts and projects are part of a broader strategy to reposition sports as a driver of youth development and economic growth, aligning with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy (RHINSE) framework.
The flagship project under this overhaul is the comprehensive redevelopment of the pitch and main bowl at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, whose deteriorating condition has limited its use by national teams in recent years. The main bowl will undergo an extensive rehabilitation that includes revamping the tartan tracks and upgrading critical installations such as the stadium’s roof membrane, media center, VIP and corporate suites, dressing rooms, public address and security systems, and heating and cooling facilities.
To improve Nigeria’s readiness to host global competitions, the Abuja stadium will also benefit from internationally compliant floodlights, electronic advertising boards, pitch protection systems, and the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
Further approvals for the Abuja stadium complex include the establishment of a High Performance Centre, rehabilitation of the swimming pool at Package B, construction of two new training pitches, and the conversion of the 200-bed athletes’ hostel into a revenue-generating hotel complex. The commission also approved the construction of an anti-doping laboratory, the modernization of sports medical facilities with advanced equipment, and the development of a National Sports Centre to serve as office accommodation for the NSC and various sports federations. To ensure sustainable funding for these nationwide interventions, the President has approved the establishment of a National Sports Infrastructure Development Bond.
Beyond elite sports facilities, the NSC initiative incorporates a strong grassroots development component. The commission approved the establishment of sports centers in 15 tertiary institutions across the federation to strengthen talent identification and revive school sports in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education.
Additionally, the plan includes the construction of 20 mini sports centers and mini stadiums in various communities to positively engage young people, reduce insecurity, and stimulate local economic activity. Meanwhile, the NSC noted that redevelopment works are already progressing at the National Stadium in Lagos, the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, and the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, while construction continues at the Bichi Stadium in Kano.
