Carrick Signs Two-Year Deal as Permanent Old Trafford Manager

Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as their permanent head coach, handing the former midfielder a two-year contract that will run until June 2028, after one of the most remarkable managerial turnarounds in the club’s recent history.

The announcement on Friday brought to an end months of speculation about the Old Trafford dugout and drew a line under what had been a deeply turbulent season for one of English football’s most decorated clubs.

Carrick was appointed on an interim basis in January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, taking charge of a side that had been drifting in mid-table and struggling for both results and confidence. What followed defied even the most optimistic expectations. In 16 Premier League matches under his stewardship, United recorded 11 wins, three draws and just two defeats the highest points tally in the top flight during that period securing a third-place finish and Champions League qualification for next season. Along the way, they defeated Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, rediscovering a competitive edge that had been conspicuously absent for much of the campaign.

The scale of the transformation was not lost on United’s ownership. Sir Jim Radcliffe and the Glazer family moved to tie Carrick down on a permanent basis, convinced by not just the results but the manner of the performances an attractive, purposeful style of play that resonated with supporters and gave the squad a clear identity. “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” Carrick said in his reaction to the announcement. “Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.”

It is a remarkable full-circle moment for the 44-year-old, who spent twelve trophy-laden years at United as a player under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the Premier League, the Champions League and numerous other honours before departing in 2018. He subsequently worked as a coach at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before leaving for management, taking charge of Middlesbrough where he guided them to the Championship play-offs before eventually being released. A brief caretaker stint at United in 2021 first hinted at his potential as a manager; his 2026 rescue act has now emphatically confirmed it.

Carrick’s contract carries an option for a further year beyond 2028, giving United’s hierarchy the flexibility to assess progress while backing the man who has already proven he understands the demands and expectations of the club. For a fanbase that has endured years of instability and false dawns since the Ferguson era, the appointment of a former captain and club legend one who has delivered results to match the romance of the narrative will be received with cautious but genuine optimism.
