Kano Ram Prices Rocket to ₦700,000 as Dealers Cry Out Over Dismal Eid Patronage

Livestock markets across Kano State are experiencing unprecedented economic strain ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, as the prices of rams have soared to an all-time high of up to ₦700,000 amid a severe drop in customer patronage.

A detailed market survey conducted across major livestock hubs—including the prominent Kofar Na’isa, Hotoro, and Dambatta ram markets—revealed an extraordinary surge in prices compared to previous years. Medium-sized rams that previously sold within affordable ranges are now being priced between ₦150,000 and ₦250,000, while the largest, premium-grade rams are attracting price tags ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦700,000.

Livestock dealers and market union leaders have expressed deep frustration over the current situation, lamenting that their massive investments are hitting a brick wall. The sellers explained that the exorbitant pricing is not an attempt to maximize profits, but a direct consequence of the staggering overhead costs incurred during transportation and maintenance. Dealers highlighted that the hyperinflation of diesel prices, high interstate transport levies, and the skyrocketing cost of animal feed, such as wheat bran and dried grass, have made it impossible to sell the animals at lower rates without incurring catastrophic financial losses.

The sharp decline in customer turn-up has left markets uncharacteristically quiet during what is traditionally the peak sales window of the year. Many residents who visited the markets with the intention of purchasing sacrificial animals left empty-handed, citing a severe squeeze on disposable income and a sharp drop in purchasing power.

Faced with these harsh economic realities, many families are actively adjusting their holiday plans, with some opting to merge financial resources to purchase cows for communal sharing, while others are reluctantly foregoing the traditional slaughter altogether.
