Turaki-Led PDP to Screen Jonathan as Sole Presidential Aspirant Ahead of 2027 Polls

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has concluded plans to screen former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole presidential aspirant on Tuesday, as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

The screening exercise is expected to be conducted by a 14-member committee comprising notable party stakeholders, including former Vice President Namadi Sambo, ex-Plateau State governor Jonah Jang, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi, among others.

The move forms part of a broader nationwide screening process organised by the Turaki-led faction, which reportedly involves hundreds of aspirants contesting for various elective positions across the country.

Sources within the group disclosed that the exercise will also cover National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly hopefuls as the party begins early groundwork ahead of the next election cycle.

The faction had earlier claimed that Jonathan completed a fresh digital registration with the party in line with guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reinforcing his eligibility to contest under its platform.

This development comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the PDP, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s structure.

Analysts say the decision to present Jonathan as a sole aspirant signals a strategic attempt by the Turaki-led bloc to consolidate its position and project unity ahead of 2027.

Observers note that the emergence of the former president in the race under a factional platform could significantly influence opposition dynamics, particularly as coalition talks among key political actors continue to gather momentum.
