Infrastructure Vulnerability Exposed as Heavy Rain Damages Abuja Mining Cadastre Office

The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO), the country’s central agency for mineral title administration, has sustained significant damage following a heavy rainfall that removed a portion of its roof at its headquarters in the Wuse II district of Abuja.

The incident, which is suspected to have occurred due to a heavy downpour in Abuja on Sunday night, 10th of May, 2026, was only noted this morning. The open roof section exposed a portion of the building’s interior to the elements but resulted in no injuries as of this reporting.

The NMCO is located at 37 Lobito Crescent, off Ademola Adetokunbo Way, Wuse II—an area known to house key government and commercial buildings.

The NMCO operates under the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and is mandated to “administer and manage mineral titles” in Nigeria. The damage comes despite warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) about strong winds accompanying rainfall. The NMCO is established under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007.

The NMCO and the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development have not yet issued an official statement on the incident.

This event follows a similar heavy rainstorm on April 7, 2026, which damaged the roof of the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal, disrupting traffic along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway. The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (CORBON) has previously advised building owners to conduct preventive maintenance on roofs.

The functionality of the NMCO is vital to Nigeria’s mining sector reforms; the agency has generated ₦73.9 billion in revenue over the past four years and has launched a digital mining cadastre system to attract investors. As Nigeria’s 2026 rainy season progresses, the NMCO roof damage highlights the broader infrastructural vulnerabilities of public buildings in the FCT, which have been flagged as high-risk areas for flooding and severe weather events.
