IGP Mandates Name Tags for All On-duty Police Officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed all officers of the Nigeria Police Force to wear their name tags at all times while on duty, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and professionalism.

Speaking during an engagement with senior officers, the police chief stressed that the directive applies across all ranks, including himself. He said visible identification is essential in building public trust and ensuring officers can be easily recognized in the course of their duties.

All police officers should have their name tags on them at all times while on duty, even me as the IGP, I have my name tag on me,” he stated. The IGP explained that the move is aimed at improving transparency within the force and making it easier for members of the public to identify officers and report any misconduct when necessary.

He noted that proper identification is a fundamental policing standard and must be strictly adhered to nationwide. Commissioners of Police and other senior officers have been tasked with enforcing compliance in their respective commands, with disciplinary measures expected for defaulters.

However, the directive provides exceptions for officers involved in covert or undercover operations, where revealing identity could compromise assignments. The order comes amid ongoing reforms within the police force to address concerns over professionalism, accountability, and public confidence in law enforcement.

Analysts say the enforcement of name tag visibility could help strengthen citizen-police relations and improve oversight.

The development signals a renewed push by the police leadership to promote transparency and reinforce ethical standards within the force.
