Mimiko Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid, Cites Policy Reforms

Dr. Abbas Mimiko, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) governorship candidate in Ondo State’s 2024 election, has announced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election in 2027, citing key economic reforms undertaken by the administration.

Speaking with journalists in Akure on Sunday, Mimiko said the President’s policy direction, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, demonstrated the kind of decisive leadership needed to address Nigeria’s long-standing fiscal challenges. He described the move as tough but necessary, noting that previous administrations had avoided taking similar action for political reasons.

While acknowledging that the subsidy removal has placed additional strain on citizens, Mimiko argued that the decision reflects a willingness to confront entrenched economic distortions. He added that attention should also be directed at how state governments are utilising increased federal allocations following the policy shift.

According to him, the rise in revenue accruing to states far exceeds the increase in fuel prices, raising concerns about why the benefits have not translated into visible improvements at the grassroots level. He urged Nigerians to hold their governors accountable for the management of these funds.

Mimiko also credited the President with contributing to Nigeria’s democratic development, particularly through past efforts linked to the restoration of electoral mandates in certain states. He said such contributions are often overlooked in current political discourse.

The ZLP chieftain further clarified that his support for Tinubu is not constrained by party affiliation, describing political parties as platforms rather than rigid boundaries.

He maintained that his backing is based on performance and continuity, adding that effective leadership should be given the opportunity to continue.
