Bayern Munich Ends Six-Year Wait, Secures DFB-Pokal Final Spot After Sinking Leverkusen

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich took a massive step toward a potential treble on Wednesday night, defeating Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at the BayArena.

The clinical victory ensures Bayern a place in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin for the first time since 2020, ending a frustrating six-year absence from German football’s premier cup showcase.

The Bavarians dominated the early proceedings, stifling the hosts with a relentless high press. The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Harry Kane, continuing his record-breaking season, found space in the box and lashed a powerful strike into the roof of the net.

It was Kane’s seventh goal of the tournament, matching a single-season tally not seen by a Bayern player since Robert Lewandowski in 2019.

Leverkusen, despite being the home side, struggled to find their rhythm against a disciplined Bayern defense anchored by Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano.

While Leverkusen showed flashes of life in the second half forcing Manuel Neuer into a sharp diving save from a Nathan Tella effort they were largely kept at arm’s length. Mark Flekken’s heroics in the Leverkusen goal kept the scoreline respectable, as he denied Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz multiple times to keep the hosts within touching distance.

The tension was finally extinguished in the third minute of injury time. Following a swift counter-attack, Leon Goretzka squared the ball for Luis Díaz, who calmly slotted home to make it 2-0. Though initially flagged for offside, a swift VAR intervention confirmed the goal, sparking wild celebrations in the away end.

“Since day one, everyone has been talking about Berlin,” coach Vincent Kompany said after the match. “Being able to bring the club back there is a tremendous gift.”

Having already clinched the Bundesliga title, Bayern now sets its sights on a domestic double, with a Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain also looming on the horizon.
