Ibadan School Sports Turns into Cultural Carnival as Parents Rock Aso Ebi

The inter-house sports competition at Sunshine Schools, Ibadan, Oyo State, took an unexpected and glamorous turn on Thursday. What began as a standard athletic event for students quickly evolved into a vibrant social spectacle as parents arrived in colorful, coordinated “aso ebi” outfits.

The event, titled “Sunshine Schools Olympics 2026,” featured parents parading and dancing in large, organized groups. Clad in various hues like yellow, blue, and white to represent their children’s respective houses, the parents transformed the school field into a scene reminiscent of a major cultural festival.

Videos of the celebration quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and comparisons to the famous Ojude Oba festival.

Many viewers were captivated by the elaborate traditional styles and the high level of coordination displayed by the various parent groups.

The unconventional display sparked a wave of humorous reactions online. Social media users jokingly questioned whether the event was actually meant for the children or the adults, with many noting that the parents’ enthusiastic participation and fashion statements had effectively stolen the spotlight.

Traditionally, Nigerian inter-house sports are formal athletic meets where parents typically watch from the sidelines in casual attire. However, this event highlights a growing trend where school functions serve as significant social gatherings, merging sports with deep-rooted cultural and communal traditions.

While it is unclear if this “aso ebi” trend will become a permanent feature in Nigerian school sports, the Ibadan event has sparked a national conversation. It reflects the evolving nature of school activities and the unique ways Nigerian families choose to celebrate their children’s milestones.
