Abia Governor Pledges Support for Anti-Oil Theft Task Force

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has assured the Joint Task Force (JTF), South-South, Operation Delta Safe of his administration’s unwavering support in its intensified campaign against crude oil theft and related criminal activities.

The governor made the pledge on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of the JTF, led by its new Commander, Olugbenga Oladipo, at his office in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

Otti reaffirmed his commitment to inter-agency collaboration, highlighting the importance of protecting oil infrastructure, safeguarding residents, and creating a secure environment for investors.

“We are committed to working together to eliminate crime in our state. Our people should be able to live, conduct business, and sleep safely,” Otti said. He praised Commander Oladipo for the visible progress made since taking office in November and stressed that understanding how oil thieves operate is key to dismantling criminal networks.

The governor recalled that some local government areas were once inaccessible due to banditry but credited ongoing efforts by security agencies for restoring peace.

He also noted that the state conducts monthly Security Council meetings and has strengthened its security system through its Homeland Security outfit.

Otti encouraged the JTF to establish a dedicated operational base in Ukwa West LGA, the state’s oil-producing hub, promising accommodation and logistical support.

“We are ready to host your base here while you continue operations from Yenagoa.

“You’ll have everything you need, particularly in Ukwa West,” he said.

Commander Oladipo, for his part, explained that the JTF’s mandate covers Niger Delta states and parts of the South-East with oil facilities.

The task force works to protect oil and gas infrastructure, curb crude oil theft, safeguard lives and property, and support increased production under directives from President Bola Tinubu.

While pipeline vandalism has decreased due to protection contracts, Oladipo noted that criminals have shifted to wellheads, employing tactics like drone jammers and chemical adulteration of crude oil. He assured the governor that the JTF maintains a 24-hour Quick Response Squad ready for immediate deployment whenever needed.

Navy Captain MacDonald Ubah (Rtd), Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, described the new commander as highly capable and expressed confidence that his leadership would further reduce oil theft and related crimes in the state.
