Prominent Islamic Cleric Sheikh ‘Rigi-Rigi’ Kusfa Dies at 57
A renowned Zaria-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Usman Idris Kusfa, popularly known as “Rigi-Rigi,” has died at the age of 57.
The death of the respected scholar was confirmed on Monday by one of his senior disciples, Nasiruddeen Umar, also known as Baharu, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria.
According to Umar, Sheikh Kusfa passed away in the early hours of Monday at a private hospital in Kaduna after battling an illness for several months.
“Sheikh Kusfa died peacefully after a prolonged illness. His death is a huge loss to the Islamic community and to all who benefited from his teachings,” Umar said.
Sheikh Kusfa was widely known for his deep Islamic scholarship, simple preaching style, and strong engagement with young people.
In recent years, he gained national and international recognition through his active presence on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where his sermons and religious explanations attracted thousands of followers.
Through his online and physical preaching, the cleric addressed issues ranging from Islamic jurisprudence and moral conduct to contemporary social challenges, earning him a loyal following across northern Nigeria and beyond.
The late cleric is survived by four wives, 37 children, and several grandchildren.
Umar disclosed that funeral prayers for the deceased have been scheduled for Monday at about 4:30 p.m. in Kusfa, Zaria City, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Since the announcement of his death, tributes have continued to pour in from Islamic scholars, students, and followers on social media, many describing Sheikh Kusfa as a humble teacher, devoted preacher, and a bridge between traditional Islamic scholarship and modern communication platforms.
