Stage Explosion Kills Crew Member on Set

A special effects artist, James Akaie, has tragically lost his life following an explosion on a film set in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The incident was confirmed by the film’s producer and director, James Abinibi, who described the event as a profound sorrow for the entire production team.
The fatal accident occurred as filming was nearing completion. According to official statements, the explosion took place in a designated effects preparation area located outside the main filming set, rather than during an active scene.
The blast reportedly happened while Akaie was experimenting with an unauthorized pyrotechnic simulation. This involved the use of a gas cylinder, which was being handled by the artist and two of his assistants at the time of the accident.
Following the explosion, Akaie sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away.
His two assistants also suffered fire burns but were stabilized and are currently receiving treatment at a specialist facility.
In the wake of the tragedy, the production team has expressed its full cooperation with relevant authorities. An investigation is currently underway to determine the specific circumstances and safety breaches that led to the unauthorized simulation.
Director James Abinibi paid tribute to Akaie, describing him as a brilliant and dedicated professional.
He has appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the bereaved family and the crew members as they navigate this difficult loss.
