Wife Laments Husband’s Paucity of Funds as Ilorin Area Court Dissolves Marriage

An area court sitting at Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, in Kwara State, has dissolved the marriage between Toyin Ajibola and Bashirat Mohammed following complaints of prolonged financial hardship.

The ruling was delivered by Hammad Ajumonbi, the trial judge, after Bashirat approached the court seeking an end to the marriage, citing her husband’s inability to provide adequate financial support.

While addressing the court, Bashirat said the situation had taken a toll on her wellbeing and peace of mind.

“I am asking the court to grant me a divorce so that I can have rest of mind,” she told the judge.

Ajibola, however, opposed the divorce, saying he still wished to continue with the marriage despite his financial difficulties.

In his judgment, Ajumonbi ruled that although the husband expressed interest in sustaining the union, no one should be compelled to remain in a marriage they no longer desire. He added that Bashirat should be allowed to move on with her life to avoid further hardship.

The court consequently ordered the dissolution of the marriage and granted custody of the couple’s three children to the wife.

Ajibola was directed to continue providing for the children’s feeding.

The judge also stated that the father should have unrestricted access to the children, instructing the mother to make them available whenever he requested to see them.

In addition, the court ordered Bashirat to observe a three-month iddah (waiting) period before entering into another marriage.
