Rivers Assembly Denies Halting Impeachment Process

The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially refuted reports claiming it had discontinued the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

Assembly spokesperson Enemi George addressed the rumors in a statement, dismissing claims of a withdrawal or an apology to President Bola Tinubu as “deliberate misinformation.”

He clarified that the legislative action is still very much active and remains a priority for the House.

Spokesperson George emphasized that the impeachment move is “fully on course” and that formal notices regarding alleged gross misconduct have already been served to the Governor and Deputy Governor. The Assembly maintains that its actions are rooted in its constitutional mandate to oversee the executive and address any legal infractions.

They have urged the public to disregard “false narratives” intended to cause friction between the House and the citizens.

This current move represents the third attempt by the state legislature to remove Governor Fubara since he assumed office in 2023.

The ongoing friction is largely attributed to the persistent political feud between the Governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Despite previous interventions by the Presidency, the relationship between the two factions has continued to deteriorate.

The political climate in Rivers State remains highly volatile, especially following the breakdown of past peace deals and the Governor’s recent defection from the PDP to the APC.

While the Governor has sought political protection through this party switch, the Assembly appears determined to proceed with its investigation.

The House leadership insists they will not be dissuaded by “cheap blackmail” as they continue to exercise their oversight powers.
