Kano to Map Tertiary Education Sector with Statewide Census

The Kano State Government has announced plans to carry out a detailed census of all tertiary educational institutions operating within the state, in a move aimed at strengthening data-driven planning in the education sector.

The exercise, scheduled to run from January 14 to January 23, 2026, will be coordinated by the Kano State Bureau of Statistics and will span 10 working days.

The Statistician-General of the state, Dr. Suraj Sulaiman, made this known in a statement released on Saturday in Kano.

According to the bureau, the census is designed to provide a clear and current overview of the tertiary education landscape in Kano State.

Information to be gathered will cover a wide range of indicators, including the total number and categories of tertiary institutions, student enrolment figures, academic programmes offered, and the availability of key facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, and libraries.

Data on staffing strength, qualifications, and the operational status of institutions will also be captured.

Dr. Sulaiman explained that the initiative would serve as a vital tool for policymakers and education administrators, enabling them to make informed decisions on funding, infrastructure development, and academic planning.

He noted that the success of the exercise would rely heavily on the cooperation of institutions across the state, adding that trained enumerators and supervisors would be deployed to ensure accuracy and professionalism during data collection.

“The cooperation of all tertiary institutions is critical to shaping the future of education in Kano State. The data gathered will play a key role in evidence-based decision-making,” he said.

The statistician-general further stressed that institutions are expected to provide timely and correct information, as the census is expected to reveal both the strengths and gaps within the state’s tertiary education system.

He described the upcoming exercise as one of the most far-reaching data collection efforts undertaken in the sector in recent years, saying it would offer a more comprehensive understanding of existing capacities and the challenges facing higher education in Kano State.
