A Lagos Hospital Sued for Negligence, Causing Urinaryis Tract Injuries

A Lagos based consultant architect, Alfred Ogene, has initiated a legal claim against R-Jolad Hospital Nigeria Limited, seeking over N830 million in damages for alleged medical negligence. The incident occurred in November 2025 after Ogene was admitted to the hospital’s Gbagada facility for treatment following a stroke.
The claimant alleges that the hospital’s staff mishandled the insertion and maintenance of a urinary catheter, leading to a series of traumatic complications that resulted in permanent damage to his urinary system.
According to the legal demand, the situation escalated when a nurse replaced a faulty catheter, causing Ogene to experience excruciating pain in his groin.
Despite his repeated complaints, staff members allegedly dismissed the pain as “normal” until his abdomen became severely bloated and hardened due to urine retention. The claim asserts that doctors eventually had to “crudely” remove the catheter, causing significant bleeding, and were forced to pierce his lower abdomen to drain the bladder after struggling for over half an hour to resolve the blockage.
The physical and psychological toll on Ogene has been profound, as the injury has reportedly left him unable to perform his professional duties or his roles within the church.
His legal team at Nojim Tairu & Co. argued that the hospital continued to bill the patient for treatments necessitated by their own alleged errors. The requested compensation includes N500 million for negligent treatment, N100 million for psychological trauma, and a monthly payment of N10 million until 2042 to cover the loss of earnings from his architectural consultancy.
In response to the allegations, R-Jolad Hospital issued a statement confirming that the matter has been escalated for a thorough investigation. The facility maintained that it adheres to high professional ethics and prioritizes patient safety, promising to address the grievance with the “utmost seriousness.”
While the hospital investigates the internal procedures surrounding Ogene’s care, the claimant remains steadfast in seeking justice for the life-altering injuries he sustained during his stay.
