FG Orders Textbook Reuse, Restricts Graduation Ceremonies Nationwide

The Federal Government has announced new education policies that will restrict graduation ceremonies in schools and require the reuse of textbooks, as part of efforts to reduce costs for parents and improve learning standards.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaba Sai’d, disclosed the measures today explaining that the reforms are aimed at easing financial pressure on families and promoting sustainability within the school system.

Under the new guidelines, graduation ceremonies will only be allowed for pupils and students completing Primary 6, Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary School 3, while graduation events for other classes have been discontinued to curb unnecessary expenses.

The government also directed schools to adopt durable textbooks designed for long-term use, lasting between four and six years.

Schools are no longer permitted to sell disposable workbooks alongside textbooks, a practice officials say forces parents to buy new books every year.

According to the ministers, the reusable textbooks will allow materials to be shared among siblings, reduce waste and ensure that revisions are based on meaningful content improvements rather than cosmetic changes.

They added that the reforms include stricter quality control of learning materials, fewer approved textbooks per subject and continued oversight by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, as the government moves to strengthen teaching quality and make education more affordable nationwide.
