US to Withdraw from Most UN, International Organisations

US to Withdraw from Most UN, International Organisations

‎U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum directing the United States to withdraw from 66 international organizations, a move that includes 31 United Nations entities and 35 non-UN organizations.

‎This decision serves as a significant escalation of the administration’s “America First” foreign policy.

The White House stated that these organizations no longer serve American interests and often promote “globalist agendas” or “radical climate policies” that conflict with U.S. sovereignty and economic strength.

By ending participation and funding, the administration intends to redirect billions of taxpayer dollars toward domestic priorities like infrastructure and border security.

‎The most prominent target of this memorandum is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

As the foundational 1992 treaty for global climate cooperation and the parent agreement of the Paris Accord, a U.S. exit would make the United States the only nation in the world not party to the convention.

Other major bodies included in the withdrawal list are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and UN Women.

‎Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the move, describing the targeted institutions as often “anti-American, useless, or wasteful.” Conversely, the decision has faced intense criticism from international allies and environmental groups who argue that withdrawing from these scientific and diplomatic bodies is a “strategic blunder” that cedes global leadership to rivals like China.

‎This latest round of withdrawals follows earlier actions by the administration to exit the World Health Organization, the UN Human Rights Council, and the Paris Climate Agreement for a second time.
