Malami Frets over Alleged Planned Rearrest by DSS

Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has raised an alarm over an alleged plot by the Department of State Services to re-arrest him immediately upon his release from custody.

Through a statement issued by his media aide, Malami claimed that security operatives have mounted surveillance around the Kuje Correctional Center to intercept him despite a court order granting him bail several weeks ago.

The statement suggests that while the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory granted him bail, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has allegedly refused to release him, a move his team describes as a frustration of judicial authority. Malami’s legal camp asserts that they have intelligence indicating the planned re-arrest would involve unrelated and fabricated charges intended to keep him in indefinite detention.

His team characterized these actions as a serious assault on constitutional safeguards and an abuse of state power that undermines public confidence in the rule of law. They also expressed deep concern for the safety of Malami and his family.

This situation occurs amidst ongoing legal battles where Malami, along with members of his family, faces charges related to money laundering and the interim forfeiture of properties valued at over N213 billion. Malami is now calling on the international community and civil society to monitor the situation and ensure that security agencies adhere to the law.
