Why Sowore Remains in Custody, Say Police
Amidst growing calls for the release of Omoyele Sowore, the Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, has elucidated the reasons for the activist’s continued detention.
According to the Daily Sun, protesters converged on the force headquarters on Friday, demanding Sowore’s freedom following his summons over alleged “forgery and inciting disturbance.”
Addressing the assembly, Shogunle explained that Sowore remains in custody due to his refusal to provide a statement.
“In my presence, the two petitions against Omoyele Sowore were presented to him. One pertains to the forgery of a police document, which he disseminated online, and we are all aware of the legal implications.
“It is incumbent upon you to disclose the source of the forged document. The second petition concerns cyberbullying.
“The petitions were shown to him in the presence of his legal counsel. The issue at hand is his refusal to offer a statement in their presence. This is on record.
“The procedure under Nigerian law is unequivocal. When an allegation is leveled against you, you are summoned and have a duty to articulate your position,” he stated.
