China Welcomes Improved US–Russia Relations, Xi Tells Putin in Strategic Call

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed Beijing’s support for the warming relations between the United States and Russia, stating that China is pleased to see renewed contact between the two major powers.

The remark came during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling China’s broader endorsement of diplomatic engagement amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

According to details from the call, which took place earlier this week, Xi emphasized that China “would like to see” the United States and Russia improve their ties, especially in light of efforts to de-escalate the war in Ukraine. The conversation reportedly touched on global stability, regional cooperation, and the growing momentum for political solutions to longstanding conflicts.

The statement comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump, a frontrunner in the 2026 presidential race, has hinted at possible involvement in resolving the Russia–Ukraine war. Xi’s comments are seen as a diplomatic nod to any initiative that could foster multilateral dialogue and reduce tensions in Eastern Europe.

Putin, on his part, reportedly welcomed China’s stance and reaffirmed the strong partnership between Moscow and Beijing. Both leaders discussed deepening bilateral ties, regional development strategies, and coordinated positions on international issues, including the United Nations and BRICS.

China’s support for improved U.S.–Russia relations is viewed by analysts as part of its strategic balancing act—advocating for global dialogue while maintaining close ties with Russia. It also reflects Beijing’s interest in promoting stability without directly aligning with any party in the Ukraine war, where China has maintained a position of cautious neutrality.

The phone call underscores the increasing diplomatic activity among major powers as they navigate a shifting global landscape marked by rising tensions, economic uncertainty, and emerging alliances. For China, fostering dialogue between rivals may also serve its long-term objective of positioning itself as a stabilizing force in global affairs.
