UNILAG Professor Calls for Global Sanctions on Aggressor States, Applauds China’s Peace Diplomacy

Professor David Aworawo, has called for coordinated international action to curb the activities of aggressor nations threatening global peace and stability.
Speaking at a recent public lecture on global conflict and diplomacy held in Lagos, Professor Aworawo, a renowned professor of international relations, condemned the increasing frequency of cross-border aggression and violations of international law by powerful countries. He argued that unchecked aggression undermines the international system and weakens the collective security architecture of the United Nations.
“The world must unite to hold aggressor nations accountable. If the global community continues to look away, the consequences will be far-reaching for weaker nations and the international order as a whole,” he said.
Professor Aworawo particularly commended the People’s Republic of China for its growing role in advocating peaceful resolutions to global conflicts. He noted China’s consistent emphasis on diplomacy and non-interference in domestic affairs, especially in its engagements in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
“China has demonstrated a commitment to multilateralism and peaceful coexistence. Its increasing investment in diplomacy and conflict mediation deserves recognition in a world increasingly prone to unilateralism and violence,” he added.
The lecture, which drew participants from academic, diplomatic, and civil society circles, focused on the evolving dynamics of international diplomacy, the rise of new power blocs, and the urgent need for reforms in global governance systems.
Professor Aworawo urged global leaders and institutions such as the United Nations to adopt stronger mechanisms to deter state aggression and promote peaceful conflict resolution.
His remarks come at a time of heightened global tensions, with ongoing conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Africa sparking renewed debates on the role of major powers in either escalating or resolving crises.
