Makinde Set to Make History as First Governor to Install Three Olubadans

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde is on the verge of making history as the first sitting governor to install three Olubadans of Ibadanland, following the recent death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne in July 2024, died on July 7, 2025, at the age of 90. His death has set in motion the traditional succession process, with former Oyo State Governor and current Otun Olubadan, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, expected to become the 44th Olubadan.

Makinde had previously installed Oba Lekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan in March 2022, and Oba Olakulehin as the 43rd in July 2024. The upcoming installation of Ladoja would mark the third time he is performing the ceremony within his tenure, a development unprecedented in the state’s political and traditional history.

Ibadan’s succession system alternates between two royal lines — the Otun (civil) and the Balogun (military) lines. With the demise of Oba Olakulehin from the Balogun line, the throne now reverts to the Otun line, placing Ladoja next in line. Ladoja, who governed Oyo State between 2003 and 2007, was elevated to the position of Otun Olubadan in August 2024 after years of progression through the traditional hierarchy.

According to sources close to the Olubadan-in-Council, the traditional rites for the installation have commenced, and an official announcement is expected soon. Once concluded, Governor Makinde will officially present the staff of office to Ladoja, confirming him as the next monarch.

Governor Makinde has expressed condolences over the passing of Oba Olakulehin and assured the people of Ibadanland of a smooth and respectful transition in line with tradition. His administration has maintained strong ties with the traditional institution, and the anticipated installation further reinforces his legacy in preserving the cultural heritage of the state.

The formal coronation ceremony is expected to take place at Mapo Hall in Ibadan. Once installed, Ladoja will become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, and Makinde will have made history as the only governor to crown three Olubadans during a single tenure.
