Wike Pushes for Reconciliation as PDP Begins Nationwide Primaries Ahead of INEC Deadline

The Peoples Democratic Party has announced plans to commence nationwide primaries ahead of the May 30 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for political parties to conclude candidate selection.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after the party’s 108th National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja, where leaders also emphasised the need for unity and strict adherence to electoral guidelines.

The party said it had approved a timetable and schedule of activities for the primaries, including the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms, in line with the electoral calendar for the 2027 general elections.

It urged all party organs and stakeholders to comply with INEC regulations and timelines, stressing that adherence would ensure a transparent and credible nomination process.

During the meeting, Nyesom Wike called on the National Working Committee to immediately establish a reconciliation committee to engage members who had left the party.

Wike said outreach efforts could encourage defectors to return, noting that uncertainty within the party may have contributed to earlier defections. He added that resolving internal disputes through dialogue and inclusiveness would strengthen the party ahead of upcoming elections.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, stating that its strength lies in resolving disagreements through established structures and mutual respect.

The NEC also commended the current National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu for stabilising the party following its recent national convention.

In addition, the party reiterated that it remains united despite past internal challenges, expressing confidence in its leadership to drive growth and electoral success.

The PDP called on members to remain loyal and prioritise the party’s collective interests, while urging state chapters to begin preparations for the primaries and promptly resolve any disputes arising from the process.
