Gunmen Attack Herders in Plateau, Kill Five Cattle

The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has reported an attack on herders in Izovo community, Miango district of Bassa Local Government Area, resulting in the killing of five cattle and the disappearance of three others.

State chairman of the association, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the incident in Jos on Sunday, stating that the matter has been reported to security agencies.

According to him, the attackers struck on Saturday afternoon while herders were grazing their livestock, opening fire and forcing them to flee before killing the animals using machetes and gunshots.

Babayo described the incident as a serious threat to the livelihoods of pastoralists and warned that it could undermine ongoing peace efforts in the state.

He said the attack represents a dangerous development capable of escalating tensions, noting that cattle rearing remains a legitimate source of income for many families and should be protected.

The association called on security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice, warning that inaction could further destabilise the area.

It also urged herders to remain calm and avoid reprisals, while appealing to community leaders and stakeholders in Bassa Local Government Area to prioritise dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution.

Efforts to obtain a response from Operation Enduring Peace were unsuccessful as its spokesperson, Polycarp Oteh, had not responded to enquiries as of the time of filing this report.
