Ekiti State Police Command Apprehends 5 for Illicit Drug Possession
Operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command have arrested five individuals suspected of possessing and distributing illicit drugs. The arrests were made during a targeted raid on a known criminal hideout following actionable intelligence regarding increased drug-related activities in the state capital.
The operation is part of a broader tactical sweep aimed at dislodging criminal elements and sanitizing “black spots” where narcotics are openly sold and consumed.
The suspects, whose ages range between 19 and 36, were caught with a variety of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, Tramadol, and other synthetic psychotropic drugs. During the initial interrogation, the individuals reportedly confessed to being part of a local syndicate that supplies prohibited substances to younger residents in the area.
Police confirmed that the raid was executed by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) as part of an ongoing commitment to curbing social vices fueled by substance abuse.
In a statement released , the Command’s Public Relations Officer emphasized that the increase in petty crime and cult-related violence in the state has been directly linked to the consumption of these illicit drugs.
“We are focusing on the source of the problem,” the spokesperson stated. “By removing these peddlers from our streets, we are effectively cutting off the fuel that drives more serious violent crimes like armed robbery and kidnapping.”
The Police Command also seized various drug paraphernalia and a small amount of cash believed to be proceeds from the illegal trade. The five suspects are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) undergoing further profiling.
The police have indicated that they are working to identify the “big-time” suppliers behind this local cell to ensure a comprehensive crackdown on the narcotics supply chain across Ekiti State.
The State Commissioner of Police has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting the force with timely information.
He reassured residents that the anonymity of informants would be strictly protected. The suspects are expected to be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as investigations are concluded, serving as a warning to others involved in the illicit drug trade.
