Lagos State Rescues Malnourished Toddler Abandoned over ‘Witchcraft’ Allegations

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Lagos State Government has rescued a three-year-old girl who was allegedly abandoned and severely neglected by her mother.

The rescue operation took place in the Ipaja area of the state following a distressing video that circulated on social media.

The intervention was sparked by a viral post from an X user, @TheGrandmaBoy, who raised the alarm about the child’s dire condition. The post claimed the mother had labeled the toddler a witch, suggesting the child “deserved to die” while leaving her to fend for herself.

In the harrowing video footage, the young girl was seen visibly malnourished and wearing only a diaper. She was captured drinking from a dirty plastic container, a sight that prompted immediate public outcry and calls for government intervention to save her life.

Reacting to the development, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media, Ridwan Ajetunmobi, confirmed that the state had taken action. He noted that the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, led a team to trace the address and verify the claims.

The child is currently in the safe custody of the state government, where she is expected to receive medical attention and rehabilitation. Officials have assured the public that the toddler’s welfare is now a priority as she recovers from the ordeal.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the matter to hold those responsible accountable. Further updates regarding the child’s health and the legal proceedings are expected as the investigation unfolds.
