GTBank Increases SMS Transaction Alert charges to N6 Effective May 1
Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, has announced an increase in the cost of its SMS transaction alert service. Beginning Thursday, May 1, 2025, the fee will rise from N4 to N6 per SMS.
In a message to customers, the bank stated that the adjustment is part of efforts to align with current operational costs associated with providing real-time SMS notifications for banking transactions.
“Dear Customer, please be informed that the fee for SMS transaction alerts will be revised from N4 to N6 effective May 1, 2025,” the message read.
The increase has prompted mixed reactions from customers, with some expressing concern over the rising cost of basic banking services. Many have also called on the bank to improve alternative alert systems, such as in-app and email notifications, which remain free of charge.
While SMS alerts remain a critical tool for many Nigerians—especially those with limited access to mobile apps or internet services—banks have increasingly encouraged the use of digital platforms for more efficient and cost-effective transaction monitoring.
This fee hike follows similar moves by other financial institutions in recent months, as banks grapple with higher service delivery costs amid inflation and rising telecom tariffs.
Customers are advised to review their notification preferences and consider switching to more cost-effective options if desired.
