Utomi Warns of ‘One-Man Presidency’ Under Tinubu Ahead of 2027 Elections

Political economist Pat Utomi has warned that Nigeria may be drifting toward a one-man presidency under Bola Tinubu, raising concerns about the state of democratic competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Utomi made the remarks on Thursday at a press conference in Victoria Island organised by the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE), where participants accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of working to sideline opposition parties.

The coalition alleged the existence of an “emerging alliance” involving INEC, the APC, and elements within the judiciary aimed at excluding opposition candidates from participating in the next election cycle.

Utomi, referencing previous warnings, said recent developments suggest a progression toward authoritarian rule, claiming that the political landscape is being shaped to favour a single dominant figure.

The group also criticised INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark, describing the move as an attempt to weaken opposition structures.

INEC had cited a Court of Appeal directive to maintain the status quo within the party. However, the MCE argued that the decision has stalled the party’s internal processes at a critical time, noting that the commission indicated it would not monitor upcoming party congresses.

The coalition further alleged a broader pattern of interference in opposition parties, claiming that both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been weakened through similar actions.

In a statement signed by its leadership, including Chairman Usman Bugaje and co-chair Ayuba Wabba, the group warned that such developments could disenfranchise legitimate candidates and undermine electoral credibility.

Other signatories included Oby Ezekwesili and Femi Falana.

The MCE announced plans to launch nationwide mobilisation efforts, including rallies and town hall meetings across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory, as part of what it described as resistance against growing authoritarian tendencies.

The group also called for the resignation of the INEC chairman and demanded comprehensive electoral reforms to ensure credible elections in 2027.

The allegations represent one of the strongest criticisms yet from opposition-aligned figures, signalling heightened political tensions ahead of the next general elections.
