Funso Doherty Resigns from PDP Over Internal Crisis, Leadership Concerns

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Former Lagos State governorship candidate Funso Doherty has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a deepening internal crisis and a recent court ruling that nullified the party’s 2025 convention.

Doherty expressed his disapproval of the current leadership direction, stating, “I will not be a party to sustaining this tragic travesty. The people of Lagos State deserve much better than that.”

He criticized the legal outcome that effectively handed control to a faction aligned with the ruling party, arguing it undermines the opposition’s role in addressing national issues like poverty and insecurity.

Emphasizing the need for a stronger front, he noted, “Nigeria’s democracy is fragile and now under increasing threat, so this is not the time for fracturing and division of opposition political forces.”

Doherty maintained that his departure is a strategic move toward building a more cohesive challenge to the status quo, especially within the increasingly complex political landscape of Lagos State.

He reaffirmed his dedication to the public, saying, “The need for opposition unity has never been more urgent than it is today, and I remain committed to working to make it happen.”
