Ten security officers, including nine soldiers and one policeman, were killed during a violent ambush in the Giro Masa community of Kebbi State. The incident occurred on Tuesday night within the Shanga Local Government Area.
The security personnel were responding to a distress call after residents reported the presence of armed militants. The team moved toward a local construction yard where the gunmen were suspected to be hiding.
Armed bandits launched a surprise attack from hidden positions as the reinforcement team approached the site. The intensity of the gunfire gave the officers little time to react, leading to the high death toll.
During the fierce confrontation, the attackers managed to set fire to two military gun trucks. Images of the burnt-out vehicles later circulated, illustrating the severity and brutality of the tactical assault.
Governor Nasir Idris visited the Federal Teaching Hospital to comfort injured survivors and condemned the attack as “barbaric.” He vowed that the state would not be intimidated by such acts of terror.
The “Lakurawa” group, an extremist sect linked to the Islamic State Sahel Province, is suspected of carrying out the raid. This group has recently increased its deadly activities across Nigeria’s northwest border regions.
Governor Idris pledged that the state would cover all medical bills and support the families of the fallen heroes. He urged citizens to remain calm and continue sharing intelligence with security forces.
