Mexico World Cup Playoff Begins

By Rachel Akper

Six nations from across the globe have gathered in Mexico to contest a high-stakes playoff tournament, with just two final spots up for grabs at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament kicked off on Thursday, March 26, 2026, bringing together teams looking to seize a last opportunity to play on football’s biggest stage.

The competing nations are New Caledonia, Suriname, Jamaica, Bolivia, Iraq, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They are divided into two with each group producing one qualifier for the World Cup.

In Path 1, New Caledonia faces Jamaica, with the winner set to play the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Path 2, Bolivia takes on Suriname, and the winner will meet Iraq.

Matches are being held in Guadalajara and Monterrey, and the tournament follows a semi-final and final format in each path.

Every game carries immense weight, as only the winners of each final will secure a coveted World Cup berth.

For many of these teams, the tournament represents a chance to defy expectations and make history, offering smaller or underdog nations the rare opportunity to compete at football’s highest level.

Fans in Mexico and around the world are closely watching, anticipating potential upsets and hard-fought victories.

As the playoffs unfold, the tournament promises to deliver drama, intensity, and the thrill of last-chance qualification in the lead-up to the expanded 48-team World Cup later this year.
