US‑Israel War on Iran Breaches International Law, Insists German President

German President, Frank‑Walter Steinmeier has condemned the ongoing US‑Israel military campaign against Iran, describing it as a violation of international law and a “politically disastrous mistake.

Speaking at Germany’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, Steinmeier criticized the strikes for lacking approval from the United Nations Security Council and questioned their justification as self-defense.

“Our foreign policy does not become more convincing just because we avoid calling a breach of international law a breach of international law,” he said.

The remarks represent a rare public rebuke of the United States, a key ally, highlighting growing European concern over the legality and escalation of the conflict.

Civilians have been caught in crossfire, and missile attacks and airstrikes continue to impact both Iran and Israel. Steinmeier’s statement reflects broader international unease, with other European leaders questioning the legal basis of the strikes and warning of regional destabilization.

Global energy markets have also been affected, as threats to strategic shipping lanes persist. Despite US efforts to facilitate negotiations, Iranian officials have dismissed any diplomatic progress, leaving the conflict ongoing with no immediate resolution in sight.
