Kalu Urges Abia Government to Immortalize Late Cleric, Uma Ukpai

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has formally called on the Abia State Government to immortalize the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai.

In a statement issued Monday, the former governor and current Senator for Abia North emphasized that the renowned cleric’s immense contributions to spiritual and national development merit a permanent state honor.

The appeal coincides with final preparations for the evangelist’s burial, scheduled to take place this week in his hometown of Asaga Ohafia.

Kalu noted that as the community gathers to say its final farewells, it is an ideal moment for the government to announce concrete steps to preserve the legacy of such a significant leader.

Kalu highlighted that Ukpai’s influence extended far beyond religious circles, reaching countless lives through his humanitarian initiatives across Nigeria. He described the late preacher as a model of service and sacrifice, urging current leaders to emulate his virtues of humility and lifelong dedication to the welfare of others.

The lawmaker argued that honoring the cleric would provide a vital source of inspiration for future generations. At a time when moral values are frequently challenged, Kalu believes that institutionalizing Ukpai’s legacy will encourage young Nigerians to prioritize integrity and selfless service in their own professional and personal lives.

Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80. His ministry spanned over six decades and earned him global recognition for large-scale gospel crusades and extensive medical and social outreach programs that provided aid to underserved communities.

Concluding his statement, Kalu extended deep condolences to the cleric’s family, church members, and associates worldwide. He offered prayers for their strength and fortitude as they prepare for the final rites in Ohafia, marking the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most prominent spiritual figures.
