Nigeria’s Apex Bank Wins Global “Central Bank of the Year” Award

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been named the global “Central Bank of the Year” at the 2026 Central Banking Awards, following a series of sweeping monetary and structural reforms credited with stabilising the country’s economy.

The award recognises the apex bank’s efforts in addressing long-standing economic distortions and restoring policy credibility after years of volatility. Analysts say the honour reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s monetary policy direction.

Under the leadership of Olayemi Cardoso, the CBN has implemented key reforms, including tightening monetary policy to curb inflation, unifying segments of the foreign exchange market, and improving transparency in its operations.

These measures have been widely seen as critical steps toward rebuilding investor trust. In recent months, the Nigerian economy has shown signs of stabilisation, with gradual easing of inflationary pressures and improved liquidity in the foreign exchange market.

The naira has also experienced relative stability compared to previous periods of sharp fluctuations. The CBN has further introduced a banking sector recapitalisation programme aimed at strengthening financial institutions and enhancing their capacity to support economic growth.

Efforts to deepen financial inclusion and modernise the financial system have also been part of the reform agenda. Economic experts note that while challenges remain, the reforms have laid a foundation for sustainable growth and macroeconomic stability.

The recognition at the global awards is expected to boost Nigeria’s profile among international investors and financial institutions.

The 2026 Central Banking Awards celebrate excellence among central banks worldwide, highlighting institutions that demonstrate innovation, effectiveness, and strong policy impact. With this latest recognition, the CBN is being positioned as a key driver of Nigeria’s ongoing economic recovery and reform efforts.
