Manchester City Beat Arsenal to Win EFL Cup as O’Reilly Double Seals Triumph
Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2-0 to lift the EFL Cup, with Nico O’Reilly scoring twice in the final at Wembley Stadium.
In a clash between the Premier League’s top two sides, the first half produced few clear chances, with Arsenal registering the only shots on target. City goalkeeper James Trafford was called into action early, making a crucial triple save to deny Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
However, the game turned shortly after the hour mark following a costly error from Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spaniard spilled a cross into the path of O’Reilly, who headed home from close range to give the lead.
O’Reilly struck again just minutes later, directing a looping cross into the net with another header to double City’s advantage and put the result beyond doubt.
Arsenal responded by hitting the woodwork twice through Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel Jesus, but they were unable to find a breakthrough.
The victory sees City manager Pep Guardiola become the first coach to win the EFL Cup five times, while Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta continues his wait for a major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup.
