INEC Chair Demands Professionalism, Discipline Ahead of Ekiti, Osun Polls

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has called for high levels of discipline and professionalism from staff members ahead of the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.
He emphasized that the success of these upcoming polls depends heavily on the integrity of the personnel involved.
During a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, Yakubu stressed that the commission would not tolerate any form of misconduct that could undermine the electoral process.
He urged officials to remain neutral and strictly adhere to the guidelines set by the commission to ensure a transparent exercise.
The Chairman highlighted that these two elections serve as a critical litmus test for the 2023 general elections. Consequently, the eyes of the nation and the international community are on the commission to deliver a free, fair, and credible voting experience in both states.
Yakubu also pointed out the importance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), noting that the technology must be deployed effectively. He instructed technical teams to ensure all devices are properly configured and tested to prevent the glitches witnessed in previous outings.
Security was another major focus of his address, as he urged security agencies to maintain professional conduct. He called for a synergy between INEC and security forces to provide a safe environment for voters, election officials, and observers during the polls.
Furthermore, the INEC boss encouraged political parties and their candidates to caution their supporters against violence and electoral malpractice. He noted that a peaceful atmosphere is essential for a high voter turnout and the overall legitimacy of the results.
Prof. Yakubu reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to continuous improvement in the Nigerian electoral system.
He expressed confidence that with discipline and dedication, the Ekiti and Osun elections would set a positive standard for future democratic engagements in the country.
