U.S. security agencies are investigating a series of unidentified drone incursions over Fort Lesley J. McNair, a sensitive military installation where senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, maintain official residences.
According to officials briefed on the matter, multiple drones were detected flying over the base on at least one night within the past 10 days.
The origin and purpose of the drones remain unknown, raising concerns about potential surveillance or security breaches at one of the United States’ most strategically important facilities.
The incidents come at a time of heightened military alert, as the United States, alongside Israel, continues coordinated strikes against targets in Iran.
A senior administration official said the evolving situation in the Middle East has prompted increased vigilance across domestic military installations, particularly those tied to high-ranking government personnel.
In response to the drone activity, additional security measures have been implemented at Fort McNair, and the issue has escalated to the highest levels of government. Officials confirmed that a meeting was convened at the White House to assess the threat and determine appropriate countermeasures.
While there is currently no indication that the drones were armed or directly hostile, their presence over restricted airspace has intensified concerns about gaps in domestic air defense and the growing use of unmanned aerial systems for intelligence gathering.
Authorities have not publicly attributed the incursions to any foreign or domestic actor, and investigations are ongoing. Defense and intelligence agencies are expected to review surveillance data and strengthen counter-drone capabilities in and around critical infrastructure.
The incident underscores the increasing challenge posed by drone technology in modern security environments, particularly during periods of geopolitical tension.
