Trump Threatens Strike on Iran Gas Field if it Attacks Qatar Energy Facilities

By Momodu Favour

Tensions in the Middle East intensified on Thursday after U.S. President, Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening to “massively blow up” one of its most critical energy assets if attacks on Gulf facilities continue.

In a strongly worded social media post, Trump said the United States could target Iran’s South Pars gas field part of the world’s largest natural gas reserve unless Tehran halts its strikes on regional energy infrastructure, particularly in Qatar.

The warning marks a significant escalation in rhetoric amid a rapidly deteriorating security situation across the Gulf.

The latest developments come after Iran launched a series of attacks on energy installations in the Gulf, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the world’s most important liquefied natural gas (LNG) export hubs. The strikes reportedly caused extensive damage, raising alarm among global energy markets and governments.

Tehran has framed the attacks as retaliation for an earlier Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, a shared reservoir with Qatar that accounts for a substantial portion of global gas supply.

Trump, however, distanced Washington from Israel’s actions, stating that the U.S. “knew nothing” about the strike on South Pars. He added that no further Israeli attacks would occur if Iran ceases its operations against Qatari facilities.

Global energy markets reacted swiftly to the escalating crisis. Crude oil prices surged by approximately five percent on Thursday, driven by fears that continued hostilities could disrupt supplies from one of the world’s most critical energy-producing regions.

Analysts warn that sustained damage to infrastructure in either Iran or Qatar could have long-term implications for global energy stability, particularly for natural gas exports, where Qatar remains a dominant player.

Trump also called for an immediate halt to attacks on both Iranian and Qatari energy infrastructure, signaling a potential opening for de-escalation. However, it remains unclear whether Tehran will respond positively, as regional tensions continue to spiral.

The situation is further complicated by the broader context of an ongoing conflict involving Israel and Iran, now entering its third week.

Observers say the expanding scope of targets from military installations to critical energy infrastructure raises the risk of a wider regional war.

International leaders have expressed growing concern over the potential for a prolonged conflict to destabilize global energy markets and trigger wider economic consequences.

The Gulf region accounts for a significant share of the world’s oil and gas exports, making any disruption a matter of global importance.

As of now, no official response has been issued by Iranian authorities regarding Trump’s latest threat. Meanwhile, efforts by international mediators to de-escalate the crisis are expected to intensify in the coming days.
