Kannywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Umar Ascon Dies

Kannywood actor Umar Ascon, famously known for his role as Alhaji Lado Mai Barkono in the television series Garwashi, has passed away. 

 

He died on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital following a prolonged illness.

 

The news of his death was confirmed by Kannywood producer, Abubakar Yahaya Matinko, who was also the actor’s neighbor. Ascon’s passing has thrown the Hausa film industry and his fans into mourning.

 

Before finding fame in the movie industry, Ascon was a businessman based at the Hotoro Depot in Kano. He eventually gained widespread recognition for his acting talent, appearing in notable Hausa films such as Wata Shida and Manyan Mata.

 

The late actor is survived by his pregnant wife and two daughters. His death is a significant loss to his family and the creative community where he was highly respected for his veteran contributions.

 

His funeral prayer was held at the Al-Masjlisul Islami Mosque, located near the Gade-Gade Filling Station. In accordance with Islamic rites, he was laid to rest shortly after the ceremony.
