A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced Confidence Kirinee, Precious Mona, and Soniabari Sagha to death by hangingfor various offences including murder.
The trio were found guilty of conspiracy, cultism, kidnapping, and the brutal murder of a local pharmacist.
The victim, Muenalo Sunday, was targeted in March 2019 within the Zaakpo community of Khana Local Government Area. The case has drawn significant attention due to the professional standing of the victim and the violent nature of the assault.
Justice Augusta Chukwu ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt using confessional statements and forensic evidence. The convicts were identified as active members of the notorious “Iceland” secret cult group.
Court records revealed the horrific details of the crime, noting that the convicts murdered Sunday before decapitating him. They also removed other vital organs from his body before disposing of his remains in a pit.
In a related conviction, a fourth accomplice named Loveday Legal was sentenced to life imprisonment. While he avoided the death penalty, the court found his involvement in the cult’s activities directly contributed to the fatal kidnapping.
The prosecution counsel, Precious Ordu, commended the judiciary for a thorough trial, describing the verdict as a victory for justice. In contrast, the defense team for the convicts declined to comment on the final judgment.
The victim’s widow, Pretty Neewa-Sunday, expressed relief following the sentencing, stating that the decision brings her closure. She believes that holding the killers accountable will finally allow her late husband’s soul to rest in peace.
